PBL Question: How can the state of Arizona change its policy of questioning and capturing illegal immigrants to avoid the controversy it has created?
Students will research the PBL question using the internet, newspapers and news magazines and become familiar with the law that Arizona has tried to implement concerning illegal immigrants in their state. They will research how the United States Goverment has responded to this law and its outcome to this day. The students will then work collaboratively to create what they believe is a moral and fair response or solution to the problems that Arizona faces. Students will present their findings and ideas for solutions using technology.
Standard:
New York State LOTE Standard 2: Students will develop cross-cultural skills and understandings.
Skills: Learning problem solving skills, technology skills, how to be self directed, to work in groups and collaborate with others and that there may be more than one solution to the problem.
Steps: Students will watch the movie “Sweet Fifteen” about a young girl who learns of her family’s illegal status by accident, after believing she was an American citizen all of her life.
Students will then discuss the movie and the immigration issue. They will be in groups of four to research the causes and effects of illegal immigration. (How does it affect families, the economy, unemployment rate?)
Students will research the law that the State of Arizona has tried to implement. They will answer the questions: · How has the United States Government reacted to this law? · How have the citizens of Arizona reacted to this law?
Students will brainstorm to create a fair and moral solution to the problems the state of Arizona is trying to solve by passing such a law.
Students will present their ideas to the class using either PowerPoint, or a video presentation. They will also create a Blog where each group can share their ideas and see if there is any response from the rest of the country.
Assessment: Students will be assessed by the rubric that we created together as a class, daily checks for progress, and peer evaluations. I believe it is important for peers to assess each other as to how much participation and contribution they made to the group.
